What is kidney cancer screening ?

Early detection of kidney cancer is carried out in individuals at risk.

This includes patients with kidney failure, as well as those who are on dialysis or have undergone a transplant.

For these patients, it is recommended to perform at least an annual bilateral kidney ultrasound, complemented by a CT scan if any abnormalities suggestive of a tumor are found. In families where a member has had kidney cancer, it is recommended to monitor the other family members more closely.

Starting at age 45 or 10 years before the age at which the earliest case in the family was diagnosed, it is advised to conduct screening exams every two years, including a urine test for blood and a kidney ultrasound.

For patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease, precise monitoring should be carried out every one to two years, including an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen to check for kidney cancer.
